For the past week, I had the good fortune to host some of my favorite people, Carv and his lovely wife Irmina, who I finally got to know better than in just passing conversation. Carv was my very first friend from MIT. We met back as high schoolers at the campus preview weekend for accepted students, and by chance wound up living on the same floor (known as 5W, or Fifth West) of the same dorm for the next four years. Sadly, since graduation, we've only had a very few opportunities to see each other, which made this week so great. To top it off, on Saturday, I got to take them to my favorite day-trip destination in France: Beaune, the "wine capital of Burgundy." The trip was a proper French experience, complete with a train strike stranding us in Dijon for a few hours. (Luckily, we used the time to explore the city for the first time!) As an overloaded PhD student who is busy with too much writing, I'll spare you the details and just share our trip as captured with Carv's amazing new DSL camera.

| Dijon, complete with classic Burgundian tiled roofs, pastries from Bordeaux (canelé), Dijon mustards, and beer/lambic at 10am. (What, it was vacation!) |
| Beaune! Complete with fresh produce from the regular Saturday farmer's market in the medieval town square and wine tasting with some French people who insisted on showing their "wine intellect" by asking way too many questions. |
| And upon our return to Paris that evening, I (with the help of some surprisingly engaging waitstaff) introduced Carv and Irmina to two French staples: escargot and crème brulée ! (Only one of the introductions was photo-worthy.) |
