My Thanksgiving went on hold as the holiday weekend was consumed by interview prep and a train ride Switzerland-bound. As December rolled in, I hopped through the hoop of my first post-doc interview. The visit/interview went as well as I might have hoped. I even got to see a paralyzed animal walk again- nothing short of inspirational. And afterwork time around campus left little room for complaint: the campus bar had more than twenty kinds of beer and the post-docs with whom I went out to dinner were a great group. Still, a move from the city of lights to snowy Switzerland is a hard sell.
The following week, I spent a half day visiting a lab in the Vision Institute in Paris where I might also consider a post-doc. This time the skillset required was more in line with my own. I could more readily envision myself on such a project, but the team isn't exactly looking for anyone at the moment.
There may be opportunities in consulting and pharma which I'm starting to explore. I've even signed on for a part-time internship with a start-up to test the waters. Still, navigating the maze of post-doctoral opportunities is no piece of cake. Wasn't it supposed to be easier to get a job if you stayed in school?
All the while, the clock is ticking on my right to live in France. I'd love to find a way to stay but at the moment it's all quite uncertain.
Here's to a very merry Christmas and a holiday break from the regular work grind!
